Proposal
In association with students from the University
of Virginia's Architecture School,
in the Spring of 2004 Preservation Piedmont developed a proposal to survey
the regions buildings and sites associated with the rise of automobile
tourism. Entitled 'Preserving the Past in the Blue Ridge Touring District,'
the proposed survey will document roadside resources along major highways
once frequented by tourists traveling to and through the Blue Ridge
Mountains or Shenandoah National Park, built between the years 1940 - 1970
in the contiguous Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Madison and Nelson counties
and the City of Charlottesville. Because many of these resources are
located in rapidly developing corridors, it is important to identify and
document these properties before they disappear entirely.
